Montague Shadworth Seymour Moore was born in 13 Montague Place in 1896.

He was a second lieutenant in the First World War, and in 1917 was awarded the Cross for his bravery in Belgium.

Moore led a group of 70 men against an enemy stronghold, and managed to take the location, even though they suffered heavy losses.

He held the stronghold for 36 hours against counter-attacks, but when the enemy outnumbered them he withdrew his wounded comrades to safety under the cover of heavy mist.

Sources believed until recently that he was born in Bournemouth as he spent much of his life there after the war.

But a birth certificate discovered at Worthing Town Hall has proved otherwise.

Councillor Tom Wye, who now has the certificate, has commissioned a stain glass commemorative window built on Worthing Pier as celebration of the town’s new heritage.

He said: “It is great to have a reciever of the Victoria Cross in the town, and now we need to spread this news to the community.

“Worthing should know its got a Victoria Cross, it’s part of the town’s history, and we should celebrate that.”

The window is expected to be inserted later this year.
