Bloomin' marvellous

MORE than 50 vases of blooms were on display at a "colourful and lively" horticultural society show.

The recent erratic weather failed to deter green-fingered gardeners, who exhibited daffodils, narcissi and other flowers and shrubs at Steyning Horticultural Society's spring show on Saturday.

Lynne Broome and Charles Ashby took the major prizes in the daffodil competition, while first-time entrant Mr A. Burt won the certificate for the best bloom.

Mr Ashby, the society's chairman, said the committee was particularly pleased to see many first-time exhibitors, with several winning prizes.

He added: "Phyllis Hill, Shelly Marks-Thomson, John Hughes and Mrs Herson were also among the winners on their first attempt of showing.

"There were many decorated hard-boiled eggs, Easter cards and spring flowers presented in a basket in the children's section and all 14 children taking part were given a large Easter egg on the day."

Other attractions included exhibitions by Steyning and District Flower Club and Steyning Camera Club.

Mr Ashby said: "The day was described as lively because, once again, the organisers were staggered by the number of visitors to the show during the afternoon.

"Perhaps they had also heard about Lynne Broome and Patsy Walton's tea and home-made cake refreshment stall, which added real quality to the afternoon."
