Bonfire stalwart retires

BONFIRE stalwart Keith Austin has retired after 20 years as secretary of the Lewes Bonfire Council which acts as an umbrella organisation for the town's seven bonfire societies.

The retired builder's merchant of Priory Street said this week he wanted to spend more time building up the recently re-established Southover Bonfire Society.

He said: 'I didn't stand at the council's annual meeting because I wanted to make way for someone new. I shall miss it but I am sure other things will come along.'

Keith has been a member of Cliffe Bonfire Society since 1961 and intends remaining with that organisation.

But he is also resigning after 15 years as secretary of Lewes Operatic Society and eight years as secretary of Lewes Lions Club.

The new secretary of the Lewes Bonfire Council is chartered accountant Roger Meyer.
