Richard Matthews, who works for HM Revenue and Customs, was presented with a Certificate of Achievement Award for his exceptional commitment to the Charity for Civil Servants.

The award was presented by charity chairman Sue Owen, the permanent secretary at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport at The Grocers’ Hall, one of London’s prestigious livery halls.

Richard and his colleague Alison Cooper have been running bring-and-buy book stalls in the Barrington Road offices since 2009. They have helped promote the charity while raising thousands of pounds in funds.

Graham Hooper, chief executive of the charity, said: “We’ve received some exceptional nominations for our volunteer awards this year. For the people we help, this charity can be a crucial lifeline. Without the efforts of our volunteers and fundraisers, we wouldn’t be able to support them in the ways we do. These awards are very well deserved.”

The charity helps people who work or have worked in the civil service, and their families, by offering information, practical support and advice during their working lives and in retirement.

In 2014, more than 10,000 people in need were supported with advice, referral or financial assistance.

Annette Hooper, publicity manager, said: “The charity relies on the support of current or former civil servants volunteering, fundraising or donating for it to carry out its work.

“There are currently more than 750 people – a mix of current and former civil servants across the UK – who volunteer or fundraise on behalf of the charity.”

Established in 1886, it is the largest non-armed service occupational charity in the UK, with more than two million potential beneficiaries.
