‘Boris Bikes’ set for town?

WORTHING could adopt a similar cycling scheme to London’s popular “Boris Bikes” initiative, if one councillor’s idea becomes reality.

Michael Cloake, a Salvington ward councillor, believes the town would be an ideal place to replicate the environmentally-friendly initiative popularised by the city’s mayor Boris Johnson.

It sees bicycles placed at several key locations across the town, which people can then hire and drop off at an official “terminal” when they are finished with them.

It would not cost the taxpayer anything. as it would be financed entirely by a sponsor in return for advertising space on the bicycles.

Mr Cloake said: “It’s healthy and I think it would be a fantastic alternative to taking a taxi or bus, and in Worthing where we are spread out a bit I think it would be an ideal way of getting around.”
