THE sun shone down on a moving service to commemorate Canadian service men and women stationed in Worthing and West Sussex during the two World Wars.

Close to 300 people gathered at the Canadian memorial at the bottom of Grand Avenue for a short service on Sunday.

Commander Lawrence Trim from the Canadian High Commission and his wife Emily attended the service, along with Worthing’s Canadian mayor Michael Donin, mayoress Linda Williams, MPs Sir Peter Bottomley and Tim Loughton, air and naval cadets, and ex-servicemen.

Dave Petts, who the charity helped to reunite with his Canadian family, gave a touching account of what it was like meeting his relations.

Pam Vowles, event organiser and head of Worthing-based charity Canadian Roots, said: “We have the stalwarts that come each year and I was pleased to see them there.”

When an on-looker joked Canadians were taking over Worthing, Pam replied if it was good enough for The Bank of England (under the stewardship of Canadian Mark Carney) it was good enough for Worthing.

After the ceremony Mr Donin escorted Cdr Trim and his wife to watch Birdman entrants leap from the pier.
