Braving the cold for annual sleepout

More than 30 people braved the cold to sleep out under the stars to raise awareness of the plight of homeless people.

On January 28, 33 people set up camp in the playground at Broadwater C of E School.

For some this was the fourth or fifth time participating in the Worthing Churches Homeless Projects’ annual sleepout while for others it was the first time.

The sponsored fundraising event usually raising in excess of £8,000. The funds raised go towards helping the charity support over 1,100 people per year.

Community fundraiser Caitlin Mulholland said: “It was such a great event to take part in, everyone I’ve spoken to has told me how much its opened their eyes to the hardship of rough sleeping, what an effect just spending one night sleeping outside like this can have on your body and mind. It emphasised to them all just how important the services are that WCHP provide.”

A charity spokesman added; “The charity was delighted to have the support of Bespoke You, a local salon owned by the lovely Michaela Meredith who attended with two of her beauty therapists.

“It was heart-warming to see so many of the local community coming together to help raise money for such an important cause. In the morning many participants commented how difficult they had found it to sleep in the cold and could not imagine having to do it for more than one night. Fundraising events like the Sleepout are invaluable in terms of raising awareness of the real issues of homelessness.”
