A BODY was found in the water off Goring beach this afternoon, police have confirmed (Sunday, November 23).
The body of a man was sighted in the sea near Worthing Sailing Club at 12.25pm.
Police, Solent Coastguard and Worthing Beach Office staff were called to the scene and the body was recovered by two boats to the Alinora boat ramp, in Goring.
Foreshore inspector Sam Sheppard said the general consensus was the body had not been in the sea for a long period of time.
A spokesman for HM Coastguard said: “We took a call from Sussex Police earlier in the day to say that a body had been found a couple of metres offshore, near Worthing Sailing Club.
“We tasked the coastguard to get a rescue unit down to the scene. The body was recovered by local boats.
“The coroner has attended and it is not a marine-related incident, so has been handed back to police.
“The body was in the sea and it is not known how it ended up there at this time.”
