BREAKING NEWS: Elderly woman found dead in smoke-logged house

An 82-year-old woman has been found dead in a smoke-logged property in Winston Crescent, Bognor Regis, early this morning.

An early-morning visitor had found the bungalow filled with smoke, and reported the incident.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at 7.15am.

The fire had already gone out by the time the visitor had arrived but there was fire damage to a chair and curtains.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The fire service has said that the possibility it was started accidentally by a cigarette has not been ruled out.

The property had no working smoke alarm.
