BREAKING NEWS: Five convicted for New Year’s Day Prison mutiny - with video

The jury sitting in at the trial of seven men, alleged to have been involved in the mutiny at the category D site, have today (Friday, March 2) returned their verdicts.

Following more than four days of deliberation, Thomas Regan, 23, Lennie Franklin, 23 and Roche Allen, 25, were found guilty of a charge of prison mutiny.

Lee Roberts, 41, and Carneil Francis were found not guilty of the charge, while Rian Martin was acquitted of all three offences of prison mutiny, violent disorder and arson, being reckless as to whether life was endangered and was discharged from the dock

Roberts, Franklin, Allen and Francis were also convicted for a charge of violent disorder after denying the crime.

Regan had already pleaded guilty to the offence at an earlier stage of the court case, last month.

Roberts was also found guilty of a further charge of arson, being reckless as to whether life was endangered, having previous pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Last month Jurors were directed by trial judge Michael Lawson QC to find fellow inmate Paul Hadcroft, 25, not guilty of all three charges part-way through the case because of insufficient evidence.

Sentences are expected to be given for some of the men, later on today.
