CCTV footage has also been released of the incident in which a 25-year-old local woman was raped at about 1am on October 27.

Detective Inspector John Wallace said: “The barefooted woman, dressed distinctively in a red leather jacket and shorts and carrying her shoes, met the man somewhere along the A24 Broadwater Road.

“They walked together from the direction of the town centre into South Farm Road then into Poulters Lane. They would have been seen walking together for more than 1km before he attacked her close to Littlehampton Road, Worthing.

“I am hoping that the CCTV and photographs of the man may jog someone’s memory that night or indeed they might recognise the man. She was talking with the man who walked alongside her before he suggested a shortcut into an alleyway by the Mister Clean car wash, where he raped her. “

The suspect is described as white, in his early twenties, about 5’3”, with short dark hair and wearing dark clothing. He spoke with what appeared to be a European accent.

DI Wallace added: “We would like to hear from anyone who was in the Littlehampton Road area of Worthing at around 1am onwards on Sunday morning. Did you see the woman or the man, alone or together? They met somewhere along Broadwater Road and would have been seen walking together for some minutes.”

If you saw them or recognise the man and know his whereabouts call 101 or email quoting Operation Equator.

You can also call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
