Brede village voice

The Broad Oak Firestation fete at the Recreation Ground last Sunday raised a few pounds short of £2,000.

The proceeds will be going to the Firefighter’s Charity and to one other local charity which has not been finally decide as yet. The members of the fire-station would like to thank most sincerely everyone who helped on the day, made donations in cash or kind, and to the general public for turning out in such large numbers without whom such events would not be successful.

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 4, several events will be taking place in the village. At the Village Hall from 1.00 pm, East Sussex Fuchsia and Pelargonium Society are holding their annual Fuchsia Show. Normally there are some splendid exhibits to admire and plants are also for sale. The Brede Giants Pumping Engines are on view again at Brede Waterworks from 10 am to 4.00 pm. Parking is free, refreshments and souvenir items are available. New members for the Society are welcome as is anyone who likes working with heritage machinery. There is also another Village Dance in the evening at the Village Hall from 7.30 pm. The programme as usual will include favourite dances from ballroom, sequence, Latin to line dancing. Entrance is £3.00.

The Lions hold their annual Raft Races at Rye on Sunday, August 5, from about lunchtime onwards. Although there is no entrance fee, this is one of their main fund-raising events of the year and the more people attending the better to give support to all the other activities that will be going on at the same time. Brede Mothers’Union will be marking Mary Sumner Day, the founder of the M.U., on Thursday, August 9, by joining a Eucharist at St. Augustine’s, Bexhill. Please take your own packed lunch. The following week they will be going to London for a tour of Mary Sumner House.

August brings us to the time for St. George’s Church Flower Festival. This year it is being held from Saturday, August 25 to Bank Holiday Monday, August 27. This year’s theme is “The Bible in Colour”. The Festival will be open from 10.00 am on the Saturday and Monday and from 10.30 am on the Sunday. Brede Painting for Pleasure Group will be holding their Exhibition of Paintings at the Village Hall on Saturday and Sunday, August 25 and 26, from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. Painting will be for sale and refreshment are available.

Brede Cricket Club are at home to Hastings Wanderers this Sunday, August 5, starting at 2.30 pm. The following week is the annual Single Wicket competition at the Recreation Ground that starts at 2.00 pm.

The Mobile Library calls again next week on Tuesday, August 7, from 3.00 to 3.40 pm in Oakhill Drive and 3.50 to 4.25 pm in Reedswood Road. It will also be at the Village Hall on Thursday, August 9, from 1.25 to 1.55 pm. Apart from reading books, the Library has audio books as well as access to the internet and reference library.

The only service at St. George’s Church during the coming week is a Family Eucharist at 9.30 am on Sunday. The next Messy Church is being held on Wednesday, August 15, at Camber Sands. Families should gather in the car park of St. Thomas’ Church, Camber at 2.00 pm.

Trinity Church continues at Broad Oak this Sunday, August 5, with their usual 10.30 am service which this week will be conducted by Mrs. Christine Freeland..
