Brede village voice

Perhaps time to remind you of some of the regular events in the village that get overlooked. Age UK and the Whist Drive are regular features of Mondays at the Village Hall, with Rainbows and Brownies there during Monday afternoons. The Whist Drive is probably the oldest surviving group still going in the village as it must date back to the 1930’s at least. The Painting for Pleasure members have their regular sessions on Tuesday mornings and some very fine examples of their work can be seen in the Village Hall. A gentle keep fit class is on Thursday mornings and on Fridays, the Farmers’ Market goes into its 13th year. Indoor Bowls is still held on Friday evenings and new members or visitors are always welcome. Brede Cricket Club are away at Mountfield next Sunday, June 17, starting at 2.30 pm and the following week, June 24, they will be away again for a game against the Legion.

You are invited to Udimore Community Hall on Friday, June 22, when local MP Amber Rudd will have the Police Minister, the Rt. Hon. Nick Herbert, MP, as guest speaker. The meeting begins at 7.00 pm and entrance will be by ticket only, price £10, which will include refreshments. The clock in the tower of St. George’s Church has for some time now been giving a bit of trouble with its time-keeping and chiming. It is probably around 150 years old and, as far as can be ascertained, has possibly not had a complete overhaul in all that time. A company who are experienced in dealing with these old clocks has given an estimate of around £5,200 to repair and make new parts as necessary. For the many people who live nearby or pass the church regularly no doubt miss the regular chiming. Two evenings of music will be taking place in St. George’s Church quite soon. A concert to celebrate the life and music of Florence Aylward is being given on Sunday, July 1, at 6.00 pm. She was born ar Brede Rectory in 1852, daughter of the rector at the time, Augustus Aylward and his wife Mary. Tickets are £10, including wine and refreshments. The following Saturday, July 7, at 7.30 pm, Gary Marriot and Duncan Reid are having a musical evening in aid of the Friends of St. George. Tickets will be £7.00, including a finger buffet and glass of wine, and can be obtained from Marion Firman by calling 01424-751165 or at the Church door.

Services at St. George’s Church during the coming week will be a Sung Eucharist at 9.30 am and Evening Prayer and Intercessions at 6.00 pm on Sunday, June 17, with Holy Communion on Tuesday, June 19, Friday, 22, and Saturday, 23, at 9.00 am and Wednesday, June 20 at 10.00am. The next Messy Church is being held on Tuesday, July 3, at 4.00 pm in Udimore Community Hall. It is for all ages and an adult must bring a child or vice versa. Each meeting is themed, has a creative messy activity, sing song and ends with a shared meal. This meeting’s theme will be ‘Feeding the 5,000’. Trinity Church continues at Broad Oak this Sunday, June 17, with their usual 10.30 am service which this week will be conducted by the Revd. Robin Roiberts.
