Bridal event raises £5,000 for special care baby unit

MORE premature and sick babies will have a greater chance of survival, thanks to the fund-raising efforts of a Broadwater mum.

Victoria Paine raised more than £5,000 for Worthing Hospital’s special care baby unit (SCBU) by holding a bridal-themed event.

Victoria’s second child Charlie, who is now 18 weeks old, needed to spend time at the SCBU after he was born, so Victoria decided to raise money for some vital pieces of equipment used at the unit.

The wedding fayre and bridal catwalk show was held at Worthing Dome in August.

Victoria, of Leigh Road, said: “I’m overwhelmed at how much of a success the fayre was – so many people were so generous with their time and money.

“I didn’t expect to raise £2,000 let alone more than £5,000.

“I know first-hand how important the SCBU is and I can’t put into words how it feels to know this money will help sick babies.”

The money will buy vital equipment, such as resuscitation dummies for staff training and respiratory apnoea monitors.

Victoria, 31, added: “There were so many highlights – seeing the catwalk show packed with people, girls trying on their dream dresses and knowing buying them would help save babies’ lives, and the positive feedback from the businesses who attended and were pleased to donate some of their profits.”

Victoria has set up a Facebook page to continue fund-raising by selling more wedding gowns and accessories.
