Brilliant displays impress judge at show in Ferring

MEMBERS of Ferring Horticultural Society put on a show of brilliantly-coloured dahlias and garden flowers at its autumn show.

Indoor plants, including orchids, cacti and succulents, also showed the horticultural skills of members on Saturday.

The horticultural judge of the show, Mr Eric Norrell, was himself a prize winner at the National Dahlia Society’s show at RHS Wisley in the same week.

He was very pleased with the quality and the many various types of dahlias grown by the members.

Eric awarded Ron Sullivan the cup for best exhibit in the show, for his vase of magnificent chrysanthemums. They were truly outstanding.

The vegetable section was well supported and Mr Ray Dumbleton won the Vegetable Cup for most points gained at the summer and autumn shows combined.

Mr Peter Mazillius won the Autum Trophy for gaining most points in the show.

Mrs Norma Cummings won the Frank Braisby Cup for photography with her photograph of men thatching a roof in the People at Work class.

Mr John Collis won the Dahlia Cup for gaining most points in the dahlia classes. His entries of different types of dahlias were excellent.

Mrs Liz Green won the Floral Art Cup for gaining most points for her beautiful arrangements in the society’s three shows.

Mrs Mabs Welch won the Homecraft Cup for gaining most points for her delicious cakes and bakes at the society’s three shows.

The Cunliffe Cup, which is awarded to the member who has gained the most points at the spring, summer and autumn shows combined was won deservedly by Mrs Gwenda Ford for the high standard of her entries.

Mr Ron Sullivan also won the Chrysanthemum Cup for gaining most points in the chrysanthemum classes.

The society usually meets at Ferring Village Hall on the first Thursday of the month.. Doors open at 7.15pm.
