British Heart Foundation Furniture and Electrical store in Chapel Road was only the second shop of its kind to open a decade ago.

Since then 180 more have opened across the country.

Staff and volunteers threw a party on Tuesday to mark the occasion, and offered customers birthday cake and sweets in addition to ten per cent off prices.

Manager Tiernan Plowright said: “We though that it would be nice to celebrate our birthday because we are still here and going strong after ten years and we think that is something to be proud of,

“The shop has always been very steady and we have had hundreds of volunteers and staff contributing to that success over the years so we are really lucky.”

Kerry Plumb and Vicky Porter have been volunteering at the shop for around a month.

“The Job Centre recommended it as a good place to get some work experience to help us get back into work and it has been great,” Kerry said.

“It is really good fun and I am really enjoying it so far.

“I like what the charity stands for and the values and the team here is really friendly and everyone gets along and welcomes you.”

Vicky added: “The shop gets really busy especially on delivery days. We get quite vintage bits which are all in fashion at the moment and we are a lot cheaper than what you would find in an antique shop.

“I have bought all the furniture for my flat from here.”

Sales assistant Gavin Fett said: “For people that have not got a lot of money, they can come in here and kit themselves out.

“Places like this can be a lifeline but we cater for everyone and we get all manner of people coming through the doors.

“We also sell new products such as electrical items, rugs and bedroom furniture. That is something that people seem to appreciate.”

Mayor Bob Smytherman said: “This is a key feature of the main drag of Worthing and is a vital service for a lot of people.

“There are numerous pockets of deprivation in the town so shops like this really help.”
