West Sussex County Council engineers have been working to improve the traffic light system at Buck Barn crossroads after a rodent infestation caused ‘irreparable damage’ to underground cabling.

A spokesman for the council said the new signals had now been installed and the traffic management system would be removed by this evening (Friday April 15).

However, works to configure and optimise the signals would last a further week.

The council said: “New signals have been installed at the junction, where the A24 meets the A272.

“They operate the latest LED technology, which improves the signals’ reliability, reduces maintenance and saves energy.

“The signals are now in use and all traffic management is set to be removed by tonight (Friday, April 15).

Motorists may wonder why the signals are not changing quickly when all the work on site appears to have finished.

Work to optimise the signals and configure the vehicle detection sensors still needs to be done to make them as efficient as possible.

“This work is expected to be completed by Friday, April 22.

“Please bear with us until this final part of the project is completed.”

The works started on Monday February 29 and were expected to last 11 weeks.

Mile long delays have been caused over the past couple of months with some commuters describing the junction as ‘absolute murder’.
