Burglars break-in to bowls clubhouse with block

BURGLARS gave members of a Worthing bowls club a miserable start to 2015 after smashing their way into a clubhouse with a concrete block.

Worthing Pavilion Bowls Club, in Pavilion Road, was targeted for the second time in as many years, less than an hour into the new year.

The alarm system was disabled before the burglars returned some time later in an unsuccessful search for cash.

Club chairman Malcolm Gilby said: “They kicked the secretary’s door in and smashed all the locks on all the doors.

“The doors have got to be replaced and everything is just a nasty 

mess. It’s not a good start to the new year.

“There is between £1,000 and £2,000-worth of damage. Nothing was stolen but it is a little bit 

annoying.”

It is believed the suspects tampered with the external alarm before leaving and returning some time later.

The alarm notified the security company, which immediately notified police but upon their arrival, no-one was found. The club was targeted two years ago when a laminator was stolen.

Members are now installing CCTV in an attempt to deter future incidents.

No cash is ever kept at the club.

“I don’t think a lot of them,” said Mr Gilby of the burglars.

“It’s part of the modern age I’m afraid. They were looking for cash.

“As far as we are aware, nothing of value has been stolen.”

Witnesses should call police on 101 quoting serial 3 of 1/1.
