Burning compost heap creates ‘awful’ smell

Two hundred cubic metres of green waste at the Eurogreen site in Titnore Lane, Durrington, was reported alight at 10.20am on Saturday morning.

Firefighters originally attended and used two hose reels and a foam jet to tackle the fire, before leaving it with the site manager for controlled burning. The flames flared up again on Monday, prompting firefighters to return.

Matt Ttam, 47, from Goring, said he often jogged by the site and had been affected by the smell.

“I don’t think it’s acceptable,” he said. “It’s just awful, it’s really rank. My throat is dreadful, my eyes have been running and everything.”

The centre processes green waste materials – including compost and hedge clippings.

According to Worthing Borough Council, there was no danger of toxic fumes from oil-based or man-made materials being released into the air.

The Environment Agency worked with the fire service, the council and Public Health England to respond to the fire.

The compost was being monitored at the time the Herald went to press and a full investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.
