Bygone age theme at summer fair

ASPECTS of ye olde England were the ‘eye catchers’ as children and families enjoyed the annual Broadwater Manor School summer fair.

The event, organised by the school’s PTA, followed the theme of Sussex and old England, and offered a range of traditional activities.

Star attractions were a model railway, human fruit machine and a demonstration of a traditional hand-operated lathe – along with some of the more modern-day activities.

Organiser Alison Knapp, chairwoman of the school’s PTA, said the event was successful, despite some bad weather.

She said: “Every year we like to have a theme, which is generally something current.

“This year, the children’s parade had the Sussex through the ages theme, so this year we decided to follow-on from that. The first year we did it we had a circus theme, for example.

“It was really good, considering the weather, which meant we had to cancel one or two things.”

Alison said the stand-out attraction was the model railway, which was set-up by West Sussex N-Gauge Society.

A group of the society’s members was also on hand to talk visitors through the models.

Alison said: “It was something a little bit different. The model railway was 20 square feet, and the enthusiasts were great. As well as that, we had Halfords lend us two vintage cars, which was a real eye catcher.”
