Call the Midwife star to compère charity concert

A LANCING-based charity has '˜called the midwife' for help with a forthcoming concert to boost funding for its continued work with young people in Lancing.

Actress Judy Parfitt, who portrays Sister Monica Joan in BBC’s Call the Midwife, will be the special guest compère at Classics and Cream Teas, 
a concert at Coombes Church in aid of Electric Storm Youth.

The concert feature performances from the Sussex Wind Quintet and Concerts for Causes.

Both are Sussex-based groups making names for themselves with the quality of their performances and the music they perform.

The concert takes place in Coombes Church, Coombes Road, on Sunday, March 6, at 3pm.

Parking is available in the field below the church. The concert is followed by a cream tea in the barn.

Judy is a BAFTA-nominated actress who has appeared opposite famous names such as Laurence Olivier, Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay.

She has appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company and in television performances including The Jewel in the Crown, Pride and Prejudice, Murder She Wrote and ER.

Her roles in films include the biopic film Wilde and Girl with a Pearl Earring.

In 2012, she began appearing in the popular BBC TV series Call the Midwife as Sister Monica Joan, an elderly nun who is suffering from the early stages of dementia.

Electric Storm Youth runs weekly activity sessions in term-time for young people at the Alternative Provision Centre in Lancing.

There the activities include things like cooking, crafts, sports and skateboarding.

Marion Peskett, chairman of directors, said: “What has now become an annual concert at Coombes Church is a real celebration of the musical talent we have 
locally.

“Having Judy Parfitt joining us as guest compere will really add to the occasion.

“Some of our young people will be interviewing her during the concert so we look forward to hearing a bit more about her as well as 
enjoying some fantastic music”.
