Campaign for local fish in town eateries

A RESTAURANT owner is leading a campaign to get more locally-caught fish on the menu of Worthing restaurants.

Andy Sparsis, owner of Proto Restaurant Group, held an event for councillors, businesses and fishermen at Food, in New Street, Worthing, last Wednesday.

It was a chance for him to promote his campaign to bridge the gap between the town’s fishing industry and the local community.

He said: “It’s an initiative I’m calling the ‘big conversation’.

“I’m planning on making Worthing one of the leading fishing towns in West Sussex. We are one of only a handful of towns in the county where the fishermen trade from the beach.”

Mr Sparsis’ restaurant group includes Food and The Fish Factory, where much of the fish on the menu is locally-sourced.

He believes the fishing industry has become disconnected from local businesses.
