Campaign starts as Littlehampton pool future debate date set

A consultants’ report into whether the swimming and sports centre should be redeveloped at its current Sea Road base, or move to Daisyfields, has been received by Arun.

Set to be discussed at a meeting in October, the debate is now subject to a Labour campaign for improved facilities.

An Arun spokesman said: “We have received the draft Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre detailed feasibility study and are now in the process of finalising the report, which will be presented to the leisure, tourism and infrastructure working group on October 1 for members to consider.”

The potential move has been a controversial topic, with Arun Liberal Democrats strongly against a relocation.

But Labour has now waded into the debate, with members arguing a move ‘makes sense’.

Campaigner Alan Butcher said: “In our view, building a new leisure centre adjacent to the current site will make the continuing operation of the centre and its facilities very difficult and could also result in the loss of other civic amenities.

“We believe that a move close to or within the North Littlehampton development makes sense in terms of location, ease of access by roads and paths, and funding.

“It would also ensure that the existing facilities can remain in use until the new leisure centre is completed.”

The party has canvassed opinion, setting three key aims as part of the campaign.

It believes there should be no closure of the pool until a new one is opened, it must be an improvement on the current offer and be more accessible.

Mr Butcher said: “Understandably, people are fearful that the possible destruction of the existing facilities next to Mewsbrook Park will be another loss to the cultural life of Littlehampton.

“This comes as no surprise given all the threats which so frequently arise and give concern to the community.

“However, the over-

whelming view of the people we spoke to was that an improved leisure centre would be a good idea and a significant improvement in the facilities provided in East Arun for all user groups.”

The group will be in Littlehampton High Street from 10am on Saturday for residents to share their views.

They will take the campaign on the road to other towns and villages as it progresses.
