Campaign to make youth alcohol aware

Young drinkers will be put on alcohol alert in Bognor Regis tomorrow.

A booze awareness session is being held between 7pm and 11pm on the Esplanade when they will be asked if they know their limits.

They will be quizzed about their drinking habits and given facts about the harm alcohol and binge drinking can have on their health.

Cllr Roger Elkins, Arun District Council's member in charge of community safety, said: 'We are not trying to demonise alcohol or stop people enjoying themselves.

'This is about encouraging young people to have a good time but to also know their limits.

'We want people to think of their own safety and that of others by drinking responsibly because there is a link between excessive drinking, vandalism and violent behaviour.'

Businesses in Bognor and local taxi drivers are supporting the evening with information leaflets in their cars and premises.

Bognor Regis police Inspector John Merrick warned those individuals who drank too much to be aware of the amount they were drinking.

'Those who abuse alcohol and behave in a drunk and disorderly fashion could face on the spot fixed penalty notices of 80,' he stated.

Those who broke the law for selling alcohol would also be tackled.

He said: 'Police will be cracking down on licensees who try to flout the law by serving to those who are under age or already drunk.

'Most pubs, clubs and off licences stick to the law and have nothing to fear. But, for those that don't, illegal behaviour will not be tolerated.'
