Polling cards were not sent out to residents eligible to vote in order to save £1,600 – the election alone will cost around £3,000.

Speaking to the Herald this week, Mr Hendy said: “I have lived in the same house in Churchill ward for nearly 25 years, so I’m very local, which makes me an ideal candidate for a parish councillor.

“I am interested in animal welfare which naturally gives me an interest in the environment.

“I would block any attempts to bring fracking to our area. Encouraging environmentally friendly projects onto the Churchill industrial estate, getting local jobs for local people, is something that is high on my wish list.”

Mr Hendy said he would support local charities such as Adur Sea of Lights and Lancing Community Bicycle Project.

He also pledged to involve the community in the decision-making process.

On the other side of the poll, Mr Creed said he thought Lancing was a ‘great place to live’, and he felt it fair he should make a contribution to the community.

He said: “As a lifelong Liberal I am committed to a free and fair society where the solutions to local
issues are provided and delivered by the local community.

“I believe I can bring a pragmatic and practical approach to getting things done at a local level drawing on the experience.

“I have gained through my career in engineering and business management.

“As your local councillor I will work hard to help make Lancing a place we can all be proud of.”

The by-election will not result in a change in control of the council, while the rest of the council will stand for re-election next year.

For more details about the poll, taking place today only, contact the parish council on 01903 753355.

Polling stations are at the parish hall, in South Street, and Monks Farm Hall, in North Road.
