Following a recent assessment by charity Disabled Motoring UK (DMUK), Beach Green car park, just off Brighton Road in Lancing, will receive the Disabled Parking Award for meeting all the required measures.

Assessors for the charity checked that the car park has the correct number of accessible bays, alternative methods of payment for disabled people and good signage to the disabled bays.

The car park that accommodates more than 200 cars is owned and managed by Lancing Parish Council.

Parish clerk Colin Hunt, who designed the facility, said councillors were ‘pleased to receive the award’.

“I’m a former civil engineer and when you’re designing things like this you have to bare in mind a vast array of peoples’ usages and disabled people being very important,” said Mr Hunt.

Parish chairman, James Butcher, welcomed the good news at the last full council meeting, last Wednesday, and congratulated the clerk for designing the project.

In addition, to fully qualify for the award the accessible bays must be monitored and a penalty charge notice given to those found parking without a blue badge.

Director of policy and campaigns for the charity, Helen Dolphin, said: “It gives me great pleasure, to commend Beach Green car park on this achievement and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all personnel involved.

“When you have a disability it can be a struggle finding a car park that meets your needs and so it is fantastic to know that users of these facilities can be confident that they will be able to park.

“DMUK has a lot of complaints about the abuse of the blue badge scheme and we hope the award will ensure that car park operators are recognised for their efforts in tackling the issue.”

Managing director of District Enforcement Limited, Dyl Kurpil, said: “Having only recently taken over the management of this car park, we are immensely pleased to receive this award.

“It is a recognition of the ethical values we hold and the steps we take to promote fair access for all.”

The car park will display the Disabled Parking Award sign of quality for the next 12 months.

The parish recently agreed to spend more than £3,000 to lease a traffic counter system that will monitor vehicle usage at the Beach Green and Widewater car parks.

There is a charge to use Beach Green car park between April and September, outside these months it is free.
