The attack began at around 9.50pm when one of the men began yelling abuse and throwing large stones at two teenagers standing on the opposite platform, before approaching them and threatening them.

PC Tracey Searle, the investigating officer, said: “Two other passengers intervened and asked him to leave the teenagers alone but the man, along with a friend, confronted and attacked them.

“One of the victims was thrown to the floor and punched repeatedly while the other was placed in a headlock and punched in the jaw.”

During the attack a knife, believed to belong to one of the men, fell onto the floor but was quickly kicked onto the tracks by another passenger.

The second victim, a 29-year-old from Steyning, had bruising to his jaw.

PC Searle said: “We’ve made a number of enquiries into this incident, including circulating the images on police intelligence systems, but to no avail so far.
