The centenarian was visited on the day by Worthing mayor Sean McDonald at Scotch Dyke residential home, in Beehive Lane, Ferring, where she has lived for two months.

Barbara was born just outside Halifax in Yorkshire on March 2, 1917.

She moved down to Worthing more than 50 years ago, when her husband secured a job on the south coast.

Cousin James Nevell said: “Up to her early 90s, Barbara was an active painter and a member of Arun Art Society. She has had pictures displayed at galleries both locally and in London.

“She also played golf up to her early 70s and was a member of Ham Manor Golf Club.

Gardening is another keen hobby and she lived independently at home until recently, before becoming a resident of Scotch Dyke residential home.

“Barbara is in good mental health but suffers from poor hearing and walking issues. She has led, to date, an active life as an artist.”
