Charity and business initiative is a success

The evening, at Worthing Town Football Club, in Palatine Road, Worthing, was organised to publicise the success of the ‘Working Together in Worthing’ initiative, which saw firms and charities team up to benefit each-other.

It was also another opportunity for the organisations to network together.

In launching the initiative last year, lord-lieutenant Susan Pyper said she hoped it would establish a ‘bank’ of talents and resources, and her deputy, Lady Bennett, paid tribute to those who had come together since.

She said: “Worthing has an admirable record for people and organisations working together and it is a great pleasure to hear how successful this has been in Worthing.

“It is not one-way traffic. Everyone involved has benefited.”

One successful link formed as a result of the event last year was between Sainsbury’s, at Lyons Farm, Worthing, and Action for Deafness.

The supermarket offered PR and marketing mentoring support to the charity which, in its contribution, gave advice about how best to support staff and customers with hearing disabilities.

The idea is now being successfully rolled out across West Sussex and has also spread to other counties.

One of the initiative’s organisers, Julia Carette, of Worthing CVS, said the event was not about money.

She said: “It is about making certain that we use all the resources in the local community most effectively, by sharing our skills and expertise.

“The timing, to coincide with our annual celebration of volunteering, could not be better.

“I hope it will really raise awareness locally and encourage more people to come forward to volunteer.”

The other event organisers were Tina Tilley, CEO of Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce, Councillor Tom Wye, and Margaret Bamford.
