Charity walk

A SPECIAL awards ceremony has been held to thank walkers who raised more than £10,500 for the British Heart Foundation.

The charity held the event in Battle to thank the fundraisers who took part in last year's 1066 walk.

The walk, held in September, is a 16-mile trek across East Sussex, from Pevensey to Battle.

Some 240 people pulled on their walking boots to take part in the event, to raise vital funds to help beat heart disease - the UK's number one killer.

Prizes were awarded to participants including the highest individual team, individual and junior fundraiser.

All prizes and a buffet were kindly donated by Battle Wine Estates.

The team which brought in the most sponsorship money was the Conquest Crusaders from the catering department at the Conquest Hospital, which raised 878.

Highest individual was Mike Glazier, from Battle, who raised 512, and highest junior sponsors were Oscar and Christopher Rogers, from Hastings, whose joint effort raised 82 each.

Junior sponsors Oscar and Christopher have taken part in the 1066 walk for the last nine years, which will make the September 2007 walk their 10th.

Kim Brophy, regional fundraising and volunteer manager at the BHF, said: "I would like to say a big thank you to all of the walkers at last year's 1066 event, a fantastic amount of money was raised and this will help the BHF keep even more hearts beating.

"We could not continue with our lifesaving vital research without the support of local people who take part in events like the 1066.
