MP Tim Loughton had the difficult task of reviewing all the submissions from Eastbrook Primary Academy in Southwick and Shoreham Academy, which were whittled down to three talented entrants.

Friends of Fishersgate Rec (FoFR) launched the competition to find a brand that will fittingly represent the facility.

Mr Loughton said it was a brilliant initiative.

“I’m here because this is a great resource and we have a group of residents who want to make the most of it,” he said.

“There were hundreds of entrees over three age groups and the best picture will be turned into their branding.”

The winner is Harry Whipp, 10, (from the nine to 12-year-old category) who was praised for his drawing, which includes the name of the initiative and depicts children using the facility.

“The picture will be used in signs, posters and banners,” added Mr Loughton.

Harry, who wants to grow up to be a footballer, said: “I’m excited for my logo to be used.”

Harry currently attends Fishersgate Rec for boxing lessons.

His mother, Kim Whipp, said she was ‘really chuffed’ about his triumph over hundreds of other participants.

“He said to me I never win anything - to see his face made my day. Harry’s always been quite creative,” said Kim.

Runners-up included Georgia Poole (up to eight-year-old category) and Benn Gillam (13 to 18-year-old category).

Tiana Keogh, who was in the same category as Harry, was commended for her drawing and made joint winner, but it will be Harry’s picture that is used to promote the initiative.

Mr Loughton said Fishersgate Rec was an under-used resource.

“It’s a bit of a forgotten corner, but now this is all up and running at long last and we have got a great open space next to us, we need to hold more events here.

“It’s important that we have things going on. The group is all about the community getting together for the good of Fishersgate.”

FoFR is run by a trio of residents, including Toni Obee, Donna Reffold and Claire Fletcher.

They are supported by the council and other residents who have worked to make the facility into a community hub which hosts clubs, sports and other activities.

In 2013, the volunteers conducted extensive consultations with the community on exactly what they would like available for use on the Rec.

Toni said: “We’re a group of local people attempting to raise funds to renovate and refurbish the Rec for all ages.

“Hopefully, we’ll bring families together and become more visible in the community.”
