Martin Nichols retired from his post as head of English at Collyer’s after 30 years, and was recognised with the Outstanding Teacher gong at last November’s award ceremony.

A large number of Martin’s pupils attended the ceremony at the Capitol, and the popular winner received multiple nominations for the prize.

Undoubtedly the best dressed on the night, the ever flamboyant and usually eloquent individual was left speechless.

A surprise recording, featuring many of Martin’s former colleagues voicing their affection, admiration and respect for him, shocked the talkative teacher.

Martin has inspired countless students at Collyer’s over the years, not least Sam Leeves, who nominated him for encouraging him on his path to becoming a published author.

In his nomination, Sam described Martin as ‘everything a teacher should be’.
