Christian Aid Week support

Spelling out their message in coins, the younger members of Christchurch in Springfield Road marked the end of Christian Aid 2007.

The children had already raised 75 when they arranged coins at the Sackville Road Methodist Church at the beginning of the fund-raising week.

Church treasurer Barry Turnwell said: "We encouraged everybody to bring coins and spell out the words - I suppose how many coins are needed depends on how big the letters are!"

He added: "Christian Aid week means we are helping the poorer countries round the world. Christian Aid is actually 50 years old this year.

"One of the highlights this year is trying to replant lot of trees in some of these countries where they have been chopped down for firewood, and other things - we are trying to redress that.

"Some of this money goes into the national kitty and will help with the growing of trees in some of these countries, which are so much poorer then we are, like Ethiopia, and this is a way we can help those much poorer countries.

"That is just one aspect of the work."
