Christmas Day activities for elderly sought

CHRISTMAS can be a lonely time for older people but charity Friends of the Elderly hopes the community can help.

As the official partner of Community Christmas for 2015, the national charity hopes to encourage more people to organise a Christmas Day activity.

Last year, there were five Christmas Day activities listed for West Sussex on the Community Christmas website, which saw a number of older people spending the day together rather than alone.

But the charity says with research showing 36 per cent of older people in the county are affected by loneliness, many more activities are needed this year.

Steve Allen, chief executive, said: “We know that loneliness can have a devastating impact on older people’s lives and those we work with tell us that becoming isolated from a community they were once part of can be especially difficult.

“That’s why we’re calling on individuals, organisations and businesses to put on activities on Christmas Day to bring together older people in their community who don’t want to be alone.”
