Climbers succeed after second attempt

A TEAM of five friends battled the elements to complete the three peaks challenge in under 24 hours last Tuesday, in aid of cancer research.

Climbers, Toby Lancaster, 23, of Marine Parade, William McCanna, 25, of Stoke-Abbott Road, and Shaun Goddard, 25, of Stoke Abbott Road, Worthing, were accompanied by two drivers, Alex Cockburm, 27, of Marine Parade and Joe Payne, 23, of Littlehampton Road, Worthing.

The aim of the challenge is to climb and descend the three highest peaks in Britain, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mt Snowdon, in under 24 hours. The team managed to do it in 23 hours and 34 minutes.

Toby said: “It was probably one of the worst things I have ever had to endure.”

He said the group had tried to do it a month ago but their car broke down just before they got to Scafell Pike and they had to get towed back to Worthing from Carlisle.
