Collections prove a big success for Worthing Lions

WORTHING Lions had their most successful Christmas street collections to date over the festive period.

The charity had to overcome a number of setbacks but still managed to raise just under £7,000.

Marian Downs, communication officer for Worthing Lions, said: “We would like to thank everyone who put money in the buckets and every penny will go to local causes, both individuals in need and local charities.

“For once the weather was mainly dry and all scheduled streets were completed. However, the collection was not without it’s dramas and if it was not for non-Lions who helped the outcome would have been very different.”

Disaster struck two days into the collections when the speakers in the Lions’ van broke. Fortunately, Dick Jupp, in conjunction with B & W speakers, identified the problem and overhauled the speakers free of charge.

In fact, the Lions were fortunate to have any music at all, as just before the collections were due to begin their music system broke down. Max Thomas, a long-standing friend of the Lions, saved the day by lending the charity his personal tablet for the collections.

Marian also thanked Santa for his commitment and ensuring no child was left out, Tesco in Durrington for allowing the Lions to collect instore and the Beach House Bar and Cafe for collections throughout the year.
