Community groups bid for grant funds

NINE community groups in Adur are bidding for a share of nearly £30,000 of grant funding.

Applications for round two of this year’s Adur Competitive Community Grants total £28,872.89 and decisions on who will get what are expected this week.

Jo Marshall-Inns, Adur District Council’s communities team support officer, said: “The council recognises the vital part played by such groups in the life of the district.”

Charity 4Sight is seeking £5,000 towards a new community hub service, to complement the existing work at its centre in Shoreham.

As well as funding an outreach worker, the money would cover a series of sensory and exhibition days in the more rural parts of the district.

Albion in the Community is looking for an extra £2,000, to top up the £3,000 previously awarded for Friday Night Football.

Albion ladies captain Tammy Waine said: “Friday Night Football, which engages with some of Lancing’s most challenging young people, would be not be possible without the continued generosity of the council.”

A pilot of the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Electric Storm Youth in Lancing is planned, as older teenagers have expressed ‘significant interest’ in the scheme.

The youth centre is looking for £700 to cover the set-up costs and provide materials for the after-schools group.

Fishersgate Amateur Boxing Club wants a permanent home and the £3,891.89 requested would enable the move into the new Fishersgate Centre. The grant would equip a fully-functioning boxing gym and help promote it in the area.

The new Guardian Angels support group is a befriending service to support adults and young people affected by abuse.

Sussex Police has said there is a ‘deep gap, through which people are falling’ and there is a need for a support service.

A grant of £4,800 is requested, to ensure the service can be launched and operated by volunteers for a year.

A pilot Christmas event in Lancing, Adur Sea of Lights, will centre on the creation of lanterns, culminating in a procession for the whole district.

Funding of £2,039 is requested to provide suitable access for disabled children and adults to Monks Recreation Ground, as well as portable toilets.

SASBAH, a Sussex charity which has 32 registered users in Adur, has asked for £3,000 to continue its adviser service, social programme and buddy scheme in the district.

Freedom Powerchairs in Lancing had sought £5,000 in the first round of funding, but the decision was deferred in June for more information.

The grant would help pay for a lift, which could be moved to an alternative premises if necessary in future.

Also deferred from June was a decision on the £2,442 requested by Lancing United Football Club for improvements to changing facilities. A decision is now expected following a site visit.

Cllr David Simmons, Adur cabinet member for health and wellbeing, will be making the decisions on allocations in line with suggested scoring criteria.
