Concern about proposed sites for travellers in West Sussex

WEST Sussex currently has 120 pitches for travellers at 12 sites around the county and in recent years the number of unauthorised encampments has ranged from 36-115.

The bid to find more permanent sites to avoid encampments, has run into controversy. While local communities want effective enforcement and better coordination from various agencies, coupled with any new site provision- they are concerned that new sites will attract even more travellers to the county.

Arun District, which needs to provide up to 18 pitches by 2016, has made a concerted effort to meet Government requirements on new sites by pinpointing potential places.

Now Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert has given his backing to Arun residents who are objecting to the location of permanent sites for travellers in their villages.
