Concerned parents in crossing help call

George V Avenue, the road in question, lies close to West Park CE First and Middle School, and Elm Grove First School, and is an often-used route to both.

But the parents are concerned that older children, who walk to school on their own, do not have a safe way of crossing.

Both schools have given their support to the petition, which was submitted to the county council with over 250 signatures.

Jo Claydon, 42, of Ripley Road, Worthing, who started the petition, sent it in early as she wanted to see action taken quickly.

She said: “When you have children in year five or six, they want a bit of independence, and go to school on their own.

“We have been told that we can’t get a permanent crossing, so it has to be something that is temporary.”

It is hoped that a lollipop person could be hired, and would be situated at the north end of George V Avenue.

Mrs Claydon said there was a crossing island at the other end of the road, but it was unlikely children would walk the extra distance to cross safely.

She said: “If they can do something quickly to cross, they will.

“I find it unbelieveable that there is nothing in place already.

“It has been flagged up before, so I can only imagine funding wasn’t available.”
