A council spokesperson said: “The council was alerted to small number of damaged planks and side rails on Shoreham Boardwalk. Subsequently, a contractor was dispatched to undertake the repairs.

“The walkway was designed for disabled access and has proved popular with families, dog walkers and joggers. It is not for cyclists or horse riders.

“After the council installed signs, we are pleased to report that the numbers of cyclists using the boardwalk are now very much reduced and we thank them for their co-operation.

We don’t believe that large numbers of horse-riders are using the boardwalk but would request their understanding and support in complying with the ban.”

District councillor and Chair of Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association Joss Loader said: “The boardwalk is a really great facility that opens up the beach to many people who otherwise would struggle to enjoy it, particularly people with disabilities and parents with buggies.

“I haven’t seen any horses on there, personally, and it may be that a few people just aren’t aware that they shouldn’t be riding on the boardwalk – which wasn’t designed for them, or cyclists, as it’s too narrow.”
