Officers were called to the property, on Robertson Terrace, in Hastings, after firefighters driving in the area noticed something ‘suspicious’.

A spokesperson from Sussex Police said: “Sussex Police are currently on scene at a residence in Robertson Terrace, Hastings, in relation to an item being discovered.

“The item is a small piece of ordnance from World War Two.”

Officers are currently liaising directly with the residents and EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) to determine the safest way to dispose of the item.

Unexploded ordnance or explosive remnants of war (ERW) are explosive weapons (bombs, shells, grenades, land mines, naval mines, cluster munitions, etc.) that did not explode when they were employed and still pose a risk of detonation, potentially many decades after they were used or discarded.
