COUNTY NEWS: Former police chief dies at 92

Harry Gape was a Sussex Police Divisional Commander in Eastbourne from 1969 to 1975. He was also the Force Training Officer and Divisional Commander at Crawley and Horsham.

On retirement from the police, Harry took up a senior role with the RSPCA.

Ian Eady, former Sussex Police Chief Superintendent, said, “Harry was a good and effective detective. His ability was recognised quite rightly and he progressed to Chief Superintendent. He was always liked and respected as a boss. He would sometimes blow his top when standards slipped but he soon came down to earth again and never lost the ability to make people laugh.”

Harry and his wife Enid made their home in Willingdon. He was a governor at Willingdon Primary School and councillor on Willingdon Parish Council and active in Round Table and Rotary.

He was also a supporter of Willingdon and Eastbourne cricket clubs and junior cricket at Sussex County Cricket Club.

A celebration of his life will take place on Thursday (November 19) at 11.30am at Folkington Manor.
