COUNTY NEWS: Major incident declared after Sussex bus crash

Sussex Police is dealing with a “major incident” in Sussex after a crash involving two buses this morning (July 6).

One person, believed to be a bus driver, is said to be trapped, after the crash in North Street, Brighton.

Police said there are reports of “multiple injuries”, and two people have sustained life-threatening injuries.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service said it is treating “a number of patients”.

The buses were both Brighton and Hove services.

A police spokesman said, “Initial reports suggest there are multiple injuries in the incident in Queen’s Road, near the Clock Tower and it has been declared a major incident.

“Two people have sustained life-threatening injuries and three have been seriously injured in a crash between two buses in central Brighton.

“Emergency services were called to Queen’s Road, near the Clock Tower, at 9.22am on Monday (July 6). It has been declared a major incident by the ambulance service and police have advised drivers to avoid the city centre for the next few hours.

“In addition to those seriously injured, six to eight people are understood to be ‘walking wounded’ with minor injuries and a walk in centre for anyone injured has been set up at the top of Queen’s Road near the railway station.”

“West Street is being used as a holding point for ambulances attending the incident. A triage centre has been set up on North Street.”

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is also at the scene.

“Motorists are being advised to stay clear of the clock tower area, in Brighton, following a two-vehicle collision involving two buses,” said a fire service spokeswoman.

“Firefighters are currently at the scene and there are reports of casualties involved.

“There are two crews from Preston Circus, one crew from Roedean and two crews from Lewes, including the Technical Rescue Unit at the incident.

“East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service were mobilised to the scene at 9.24am and Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service are also in attendance.”
