The posters from West Sussex County Council remind people that if they have comments or concerns about a home they can raise them with the home or anonymously with Healthwatch West Sussex, the consumer champion for health and social care.

Ashvin Patel, West Sussex County Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “Sometimes people may have small concerns that they don’t like to ask about or they don’t know who to tell, such as checking that something is being done in the right way.

“Getting an answer can make a difference to someone’s wellbeing or put their relatives’ minds at rest.”

The message on the poster says ‘Do you have something to say about your care home? If it’s significant to you - it matters to us. Raise it.’

The posters then advise people to talk to the home or alternatively call Healthwatch West Sussex on 0300 012 0122.

Frances Russell, Chair of Healthwatch West Sussex, said “We are delighted to support this initiative to enable people to make comments and raise concerns about the care being given in care homes. We can use this information to support homes to improve the lives of their residents.”

The posters and new flyers are being sent to every care home in West Sussex. The information will also be available in libraries.

Ashvin said: “I hope all West Sussex care homes will display these posters and flyers. We should all encourage comments and feedback, whether good or bad, and know the right people or organisation to turn to if we have a concern.”

Rosemary Pavoni, owner and registered manager of a care home in Horsham and chairperson of West Sussex Partners in Care, has given her support to the posters.

She said: “There are many excellent care homes in West Sussex who are proud of the care that they provide and encourage feedback to improve their services. We must not accept ‘good enough’ when it comes to care homes and we should be striving for excellence. I welcome anything that encourages us all to be excellent.”
