COUNTY NEWS: Sussex MP appointed Home Secretary

A Sussex MP has been appointed Home Secretary by the new Prime Minister Theresa May.

Hastings and Rye MP Amber Rudd was Secretary for Energy and Climate Change under former PM David Cameron.

She will now take the post of Home Secretary vacated by Mrs May when she succeeded Mr Cameron today, making her one of the most powerful Government ministers.

Ms Rudd will sit across the cabinet table from former Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who has been appointed Foreign Secretary, During a debate leading up to the EU referendum, she said Mr Johnson was the ‘life and soul of the party but he’s not the man you want driving you home afterwards’.

Michael Ensor, chairman of East Sussex County Council, tweeted: “Congratulations to Amber Rudd on role as Home Secretary. Fantastic.”

Mark Sedwill, Permanent Secretary at the Home Office, also tweeted: “Many congratulations to Amber Rudd. Welcome to the Home Office.”
