The travellers have been served a legal notice to leave Eastbourne by noon tomorrow (Wednesday) after arriving in the seaside town from neighbouring Hastings on Tuesday night.

They are currently parked up on a grass verge on the seafront in King Edward’s Parade and there are a handful of caravans, mobile homes and vans.

Police and officers from Eastbourne Borough Council visited the group last night and this morning and a notice was served on the group at noon today (Tuesday).

An Eastbourne Borough Council spokesperson said, “We attended King Edward’s Parade yesterday (Monday) evening following reports of a group of travellers on a grass verge.

“Council officers and police spoke to the travellers. We are working with police and East Sussex County Council’s Traveller Liaison Team to resolve the situation as swiftly as possible.

“A notice was served on the travellers at noon today (Tuesday) giving them 24 hours to leave. We will closely monitor the situation with our partners.”

Members of the group said they did not want to speak to reporters.

A spokesperson at Sussex Police said, “Shortly before 7pm on Monday, police received reports of a number of travellers on King Edward’s Parade.

“Officers spoke to the occupants of seven vehicles, who advised they had travelled from Hastings. Police are working with the local authority to resolve the situation and reach a speedy resolution.”
