Despite this, Louise Westley and Cheryl Nowlan decided to take the plunge after spotting a gap in the market within Southwick for a specialist beauty store.

After months of planning and raiding personal savings, the House of Beauty’s doors opened for the first time in Underdown Road this month.

As 23-year-old Louise explained, there have been a number of challenges involved in getting to the crucial point at which she felt confident enough to launch the business, but it seems her Chichester College training and years in the beauty treatment profession have now paid off.

She said: “Putting the business together felt quite natural, having been working in the beauty business for years, but I had to use my savings in order to get it started. It just felt like the right time for me to be doing this having previously worked in other salons, I wanted to be able to run things the way I wanted them.”

Having gained NVQ qualifications in hair and beauty as well as theatrical make-up, Louise was keen to form a working partnership with her Worthing-based friend Cheryl, who is an experienced beauty therapy specialist.

Between them, they are already starting to witness a promising level of bookings for their treatments, which range from facials through to holistic Indian head massage treatments.

Louise added: “I thought it would be a good idea to open where we are as there are no other specialist beauty shops in Southwick.

“Being in a residential area, there’s ample parking here compared to town centres.

“So far, the response has been really good.

“The thing that I enjoy most about being here is that there’s a really calming atmosphere, which people can really notice.

“We want people to feel that they have been able to have a real time-out with one of our treatments.”
