CRIME LEVELS DOWN

CRIME in Sussex was down three per cent in the year to the end of March '“ and that means 4,200 fewer victims of crime.

There were fewer than 16 burglaries a day across the whole of Sussex throughout last year. Burglary numbers were down by 16 per cent, with 1,100 fewer homes burgled. The total has halved in the last 10 years.

Vehicle crime is down by 11 per cent, with 1,645 fewer victims last year, and criminal damage is down by five per cent, with 1,542 fewer victims.

A police spokesman said: 'Crime detection rates also rose sharply. Overall 29.7 per cent of all crimes were detected, compared with 25.4 per cent a year ago.

'Sanction detections, where someone is called to account for their crime, either in court or with a caution or fixed penalty, now stands at 26 per cent, compared with 21.2 per cent a year ago.'

Robbery is down by ten per cent, with 125 fewer victims; and violent crime reduced by 7.5 per cent, with 1,300 fewer victims.
