Adur and Worthing bicycle thefts to be tackled

A SPATE of bicycle thefts in Worthing and Adur has led to police seeking new ways to tackle the problem.

Inspector Allan Lowe, of the Adur and Worthing Neighbourhood Policing Team, said there had recently been an average of 10 bikes stolen each week across the Worthing and Adur area.

This has led to the multi-agency Local Action Team, which involves members of the Safer Communities Partnership, being set up to find improved intelligence on who is stealing bikes locally.

Insp Lowe said: “Bicycle theft is often a problem across Sussex.

“In Adur and Worthing we have recently been suffering thefts mainly in town centre areas, including the area around the railway stations.

“There has recently been an average of 10-a-week across the whole Adur and Worthing area.

“We have been looking at extra ways to tackle this particular type of theft through the multi-agency Local Action Team.

“That team is looking at improving intelligence on who may be stealing bicycles locally, policing operations using various methods and longer-term crime prevention initiatives, such as secure places for bicycles to be stored.

“We have conducted several cycle-marking events and will be continuing with this over the coming months.

“Cyclists can help by ensuring their bicycle is locked up securely with the best possible lock they can afford.

“My priority is to arrest and prosecute those who are stealing bicycles in the Adur and Worthing areas and my team needs the help of the public to identify who is responsible for these crimes.”

Insp Lowe said any information provided would be dealt with in the strictest confidence, and he asked anyone with information to contact Sussex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
