Mr Dale is described as white, 5ft 9in, broad, with short fair hair and glasses.

He is believed to have been wearing maroon trainers and jeans, a blue Tottenham Hotspur football shirt with the number one on the back, a quilted black jacket, a maroon, grey and white scarf, and a green Head bag.

He left his car, bank cards and mobile phone at the house but had a small quantity of cash with him.

A neighbour who was driving along nearby Upper Shoreham Road at about 3pm on Thursday believes she saw him at a bus stop near the hospital.

Detective Inspector Jo Banks said; “We understand Mr Dale has been depressed recently and although we have been carrying out widespread searches of local open land and water areas, with specialist search units and the police helicopter, and making enquiries with local people, there has been no further sighting of him.

“We are becoming very concerned for his welfare and safety and ask anyone who thinks they have seen him to get in touch with us as quickly as possible via 101 quoting serial 1397 of 5/1.

“As he had bag with him he may be seeking to stay at B&B type accommodation and we would particularly appeal to proprietors locally or indeed further afield to let us know if anyone answering his description has visited them since Thursday afternoon.”
